South River is a compact borough of under three square miles, with 16,118 residents (2020 census). It was known over the years as South River Landing, Willettstown and Washington before it became the Borough of South River in 1898. The town grew up as a river port and later drew immigrants from Poland, Portugal, Russia and Belarus, who built many of the churches and tight blocks of homes that still stand. The river that gave the town its name also floods it. MaxClean Restoration covers all of South River, 24/7.

South River neighborhoods we cover

The downtown and waterfront district, the Ferry Street and Reid Street corridor, the blocks east of Whitehead Avenue, and the residential streets climbing away from the river toward Newton Heights on the East Brunswick line. South River borders East Brunswick and Sayreville, and we serve both. We also serve nearby Old Bridge and New Brunswick.

South River's flood history

The South River is tidal all the way up to the Duhernal Lake dam. That means water from Raritan Bay can push upstream into town during a coastal storm, while heavy rain is trying to drain downstream. Serious floods hit the borough in 1962, 1968, 1971, 1984, 1992 and 1993. The March 1993 nor'easter alone caused an estimated $17 million in damage. In 2007, Congress authorized an Army Corps of Engineers surge barrier and levee for the river, but construction money hasn't followed. Irene and Sandy then damaged hundreds of South River homes in back-to-back years.

The borough identifies the waterfront district, the Ferry and Reid Street corridor, the area north of Reid Street and the land east of Whitehead Avenue as its most flood-prone areas. If your home is in one of those areas, here is what we usually find:

River and surge water in basements and first floors. This water is contaminated, so wet carpet, insulation and the lower part of the drywall usually come out. Then everything it touched gets cleaned before drying starts.

Older homes with hidden damage. Many of the borough's houses are decades old, with plaster, older wiring and basements that have flooded more than once. Our technicians check behind finishes for trapped moisture and old mold, not just the new water.

Sewer backups during storms. When the river and the storm system are full, water can back up through basement drains. We treat it as sewage and disinfect every surface it reached.

Fire and smoke. A kitchen fire in a closely spaced neighborhood can send smoke into the houses next door. Fire is usually covered under most homeowner policies.

Restoration services for South River

What to expect from our team

South River is a short drive from our Freehold office. When the river rises, there are often several calls from the same street. We triage by safety first: standing water near electrical panels, sewage and elderly residents come before cosmetic damage. Then we work through each house with extraction, cleanout and drying. Every home gets its own photos, moisture map and drying log, so each claim stands on its own. See examples on our before-and-after page.

Insurance

We send the invoice to your insurance carrier on your behalf, but the invoice is still the homeowner's responsibility. That includes your deductible and anything your carrier doesn't pay.

In New Jersey, homeowners usually have the right to choose their own restoration contractor. We specialize in working with both homeowners and insurance companies to make sure the work is properly documented and covered, so your home gets back to its pre-loss condition. Water that rises from the river is a flood insurance matter, while a burst pipe falls under your homeowners policy. If you're in a flood-prone block, it's worth knowing which policies you have before the next storm. More on our insurance claims page.

South River restoration FAQs

The river came into our basement again. Do we really need to remove the drywall? Usually, yes, for any drywall the floodwater touched. River water is contaminated, and drywall wicks it up behind the paint. We cut above the waterline, clean and dry the framing and document it all for your flood claim.

Our house has flooded before. Could there be old mold in the walls? It's possible, especially if earlier repairs went in before the framing was fully dry. We check with moisture meters and a visual inspection and tell you what we find.

Can you help if the owner isn't home? Someone 18 or older needs to let our technicians in on the first visit. After that, we can supply a key box.

How fast can you reach South River? We answer 24/7 and are usually on site within about an hour.
