Keyport calls itself the "Pearl of the Bayshore." It is a small waterfront borough of 7,204 people (2020 census) on Raritan Bay, less than a square and a half miles in area. Its history runs through the water: steamboats to New York, oyster beds in the local creeks and a waterfront that's been rebuilt more than once. In 1877, a fire burned 31 buildings in the center of town. Firefighters could draw only from a cistern because they had no way to pump water from the bay. MaxClean Restoration serves every street in Keyport, 24/7.

Keyport areas we cover

The waterfront and the business district along West Front Street, the blocks near Beers Street and the Luppatatong Creek, the Matawan Creek side of town, and the residential streets that climb uphill from the bay. Keyport borders Union Beach, Aberdeen and Hazlet. We serve all three, along with nearby Matawan and Holmdel.

What we see in Keyport

Bay surge in the low blocks. Most of Keyport sits on high ground, but the land near the waterfront and the creeks is low. During Sandy, 53 homes in the borough were affected, and 41 of them took water inside, mostly four to six feet deep. A row of townhouses on Beers Street took about six feet, and a nearby apartment building took about four. Ye Cottage Inn on the waterfront flooded so badly it was torn down, and the Steamboat Dock Museum was destroyed. Saltwater flooding means the drywall, insulation and flooring it touched have to come out before drying.

Older houses uphill. Many of Keyport's homes are older, with plaster walls, older plumbing and fieldstone or block basements. A slow drip can go unnoticed for months, and basements here tend to be damp in long rains. Our technicians check for moisture behind the walls, not just on the surface.

Mixed-use buildings downtown. Shops with apartments upstairs are common on Front Street. A leak in an upstairs apartment can soak the store below, and a fire downstairs can send smoke into the homes above. We dry and clean both spaces and keep the owner and tenants informed.

Fire and soot. Kitchen fires and furnace puff-backs are still among the most common calls in older housing. Fire is usually covered under most homeowner policies, and fast soot cleanup protects woodwork and plaster.

Restoration services for Keyport

What to expect from our team

Keyport is about a half hour from our Freehold office, up Route 79 and Route 35. Our technicians arrive, find the source and stop it, then document the damage with photos and moisture readings before anything is removed. In an older home, we try to save original plaster and woodwork where drying will work. When it won't, we explain why. Drying is checked daily, and our own team handles the rebuild. See completed jobs on our before-and-after page.

Insurance

We send the invoice to your insurance carrier on your behalf, but the invoice is still the homeowner's responsibility. That includes your deductible and anything your carrier doesn't pay.

In New Jersey, homeowners usually have the right to choose their own restoration contractor. We specialize in working with both homeowners and insurance companies to make sure the work is properly documented and covered, so your home gets back to its pre-loss condition. In a mixed-use building, the commercial and residential spaces may be on different policies, so let us know who insures what and we'll document each space separately. See our insurance claims page.

Keyport restoration FAQs

I live near the waterfront. What should I do when a big storm is coming? Move valuables and important papers off the lowest floor, check your sump pump and know where your main water and electric shutoffs are. If water gets in, call us as soon as it's safe to go back in.

Can you save the plaster walls in my older home? Often, yes. Plaster can sometimes be dried in place when the water was clean and it's caught early. Floodwater or long-term leaks usually mean some removal. We'll show you the moisture readings.

I own a building with a store downstairs and an apartment upstairs. Can you handle both? Yes. We coordinate with the tenants, dry and clean each space and keep separate documentation for each.

How fast can you get to Keyport? We answer 24/7 and are usually on site within about an hour.
