Water Damage Restoration in Atlantic Highlands, NJ
Atlantic Highlands sits on Sandy Hook Bay, with low-lying blocks near the municipal harbor and steep residential streets rising behind First Avenue toward Mount Mitchell. That mix means two different kinds of water problems: coastal storm water in the low areas, and ordinary indoor leaks, sump failures and roof leaks everywhere else. They are cleaned up very differently, so it helps to know which one you have.
First, stay safe
- Electricity: do not walk into standing water if outlets, cords, appliances or the electrical panel may be wet. Shut off power at the panel only if you can reach it while standing somewhere dry. Otherwise, leave it and call your utility.
- Structure: stay out from under sagging ceilings, bulging drywall or soft floors. Water-loaded ceilings can fall without warning.
- Gas: if you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
- Contamination: keep children and pets away from floodwater and sewage, and wash hands after any contact.
Clean water vs. contaminated water
Restoration crews sort water into three categories, and the category decides what can be saved.
- Clean water: a broken supply line, a leaking water heater, an overflowing sink. If it is dried quickly, carpet, pad and drywall can often be dried in place.
- Gray water: washing machine or dishwasher discharge, or clean water that has sat for a while. It carries some contamination, so more porous material usually comes out.
- Black water: sewage backups, storm surge from the bay, and groundwater flooding. These can carry bacteria, fuel and debris. Porous items such as carpet, pad, insulation and the lower part of drywall are normally removed and disposed of, and the area is cleaned and sanitized before drying. See our sewage cleanup page.
If water came in from outside during a storm, assume it is black water until someone has assessed it.
What to do before we arrive
- Stop the source if it is safe: close the main water valve or the fixture's shutoff. Our Home Emergency Plan helps you find it ahead of time.
- Photograph and video every wet room before moving or throwing anything away.
- Move dry valuables, documents and electronics to a dry, higher spot.
- Do not run a household vacuum on wet floors, and do not turn on ceiling fixtures in wet rooms.
- Call us at 732-539-2942 and notify your insurance company.
How we handle water damage
Every job starts with an assessment, and what we remove and how long drying takes depend on what we find.
- Assess. We find the source, identify the water category, and map moisture with meters and thermal imaging, including inside walls and under flooring.
- Extract and remove. We pull standing water. Materials that cannot be dried or are contaminated are removed. Clean-water losses caught early usually mean less demolition.
- Dry. Dehumidifiers and air movers are set for the space and materials. Drying time varies by material, how long it was wet and conditions inside the home.
- Monitor. We take readings on each visit and remove equipment only when materials reach acceptable dry levels, which we record.
- Rebuild. Our reconstruction team can replace drywall, trim, flooring and paint.
Insurance
Coverage depends on your policy and the source of the water. Sudden plumbing failures are often handled differently from groundwater, sewer backup or storm surge. Flood and surge damage usually requires a separate flood policy, and sewer backup often needs its own endorsement. We cannot promise what your carrier will pay. Check your declarations page or ask your agent.
We document the loss with photos and moisture readings for your adjuster, and we can send our invoice to your carrier on your behalf. The invoice remains the homeowner's responsibility, including your deductible and anything the carrier does not pay. More on our insurance claims page.
Atlantic Highlands water damage FAQs
Bay water came into my home during a storm. Can I start cleaning myself?
Treat it as contaminated. Avoid contact, don't run fans that spread residue, photograph everything, and call for an assessment before handling soaked materials.
My finished basement on the hill took water when the sump stopped. What usually happens?
It depends on whether the water was clean, gray or from the ground or drains. Groundwater and drain water are normally treated as contaminated, so carpet and the bottom of drywall usually come out; clean-water leaks caught early can often be dried in place.
Do you have an office in Atlantic Highlands?
No. We work from our office in Freehold and serve Atlantic Highlands and the rest of Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties. Call to confirm dispatch timing.
Can I stay home during drying?
Often, if power is safe and the affected area can be closed off. With black water or extensive removal, staying elsewhere may be safer.
